The Parenting Intensive:

12 Weeks for Parents Healing from Childhood Abuse

If you grew up in an abusive setting, you may have thought twice before deciding to raise kids of your own. Many survivors of child abuse express fears that becoming a parent will "continue the cycle" that they grew up in, or they feel completely unequipped for the job. They definitely know what NOT to do, but can't quite figure out what to do instead. There's also your own history to contend with. What if having kids triggers your personal childhood memories that you would rather forget? I've been there. And it's true, parenting as someone who was abused by your caregivers is especially challenging.

Raising little ones is one of the most impactful and demanding undertakings a person can experience — it requires so much of you that it's impossible to be your best self 100% of the time. For you, that challenge is compounded. Parenting can force you to face old wounds, either because your child pushes you in ways you feel unequipped to manage, because they reach an age that echoes something painful from your own childhood, or simply because you never had an example of what a healthy parent-child relationship even looks like. All you know right now is that you feel overwhelmed, scared, and fiercely determined to give your kids something different than what you had.

This program is designed to help parents recognize and dismantle their triggers while developing effective parenting approaches without repeating the harmful patterns you were taught. In twelve weekly 90-minute small group sessions, we create a supportive, therapist-led environment in which to face your unresolved trauma, rebuild your parenting framework, and cope with the isolation of charting a new parenting path without a map.

How the program works

The program is intentionally small — the same six to eight members throughout the 12 sessions. Parenting practices are an extremely personal and vulnerable topic, so this creates a safe, supportive environment in which to discuss concerns with others who share similar struggles.

The program will examine early experiences and messages about parenting, and identify how those things impact your relationship with your child today. You'll also be learning better ways to identify and respond to triggers in the moment, as well as deconstructing them and reframing the inner dialogue that impacts parenting decisions. You'll work to build new strategies and approaches, adjust when they don't work, and leave with a plan for continued support, if needed.
