Coping skills help you survive the day.
Knowing yourself changes how you live.
Most therapy teaches you to cope. You learn techniques to manage anxiety, calm yourself down, get through difficult moments. Sometimes that's what you need.
Other times, you need something more. You want to know why you're anxious in the first place, why you hate yourself, where the voice in your head came from that says you're not enough. You might have done therapy before but felt something was lacking. Or you're functional on the outside but you know there's more to figure out. You can manage the symptoms, but you want to know what's causing them. That's different work, and it's what I do.
I work with people who've been told that who they are is wrong. Men who learned that emotions mean weakness. LGBTQ+ people who absorbed shame about their identity. Trauma survivors raising children and determined to do it differently. People recovering from religious systems that demanded they hide who they really are. We look at what's happening now and trace it back to where it started. You learn how certain messages got installed, why you believed them, and what keeps them running.
I grew up in a religious system that taught me I was fundamentally wrong. I left, rebuilt myself, and understand how deep that conditioning goes. I know what it takes to excavate messages that were installed before you could question them.

Managing the anger gets you through the day.
Understanding where it came from lets you choose what to do with it.
Managing discrimination is survival. Understanding where the shame lives is freedom.
Religious Abuse and Spiritual Trauma
You can manage the shame or you can understand where it came from.
One helps you survive. The other helps you live freely.
Techniques help you cope. Understanding changes what you pass down.
